[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: 59c0f0; width: 500px;]Inspector Javert I am the law Everyone knows Javert of the Paris police, and if they don’t, they should count themselves lucky. He’s not just a representative of the law. He is the law. No need to worry though... as long as you're not criminal, poor, bohemian, revolutionary, or a sinner. In that case, he'll try to lock you up or just glare at you contemptuously until you go away, whichever is most appropriate. He's not really someone you want for an enemy, because he never forgives, never forgets, and most importantly, never gives up. Dogged and dogmatic, he accepts no excuses and will carry out the exact letter of the law, no matter who ends up its victim. Friends Let's be honest, there are not going to be many names here. Whoever he doesn’t manage to scare off, chances are he won’t like them. He does respect those in a position of authority, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he wants to stick around and chat with them. It’s possible, Gustave is living proof of that, but rare. Very, very rare. Applicants should have a spotless record and be able to tolerate large levels of angry glaring. Enemies The vast majority of people will fall somewhere on this spectrum, but in most cases it’s nothing personal on Javert’s part. He simply sees anyone who steps out of bounds as Wrong with a capital ‘w.’ This attitude understandably doesn’t endear him to many, especially not anyone of a vaguely criminal persuasion. True enmity though he saves for serious lawbreakers; otherwise he may hound you until you wind up in jail, but he’s not going to waste actual emotions on whether or not you end up there. Loves He hasn’t had any up to this point, and it’s unlikely he’ll have any in future either. He’s just not interested, and even if he was for some reason, he wouldn’t have a clue how to go about it. [In very specific terms, I see him as asexual and demiromantic if that helps any.] But feel free to suggest something if you think it would work. |

Nathaniel: im sorry he wont like you though I could see him being a pain in the ass when Nate does his trips into Paris and stuff but well yeah I dont see them getting along as Nate is part of the Sacred Heart
Max: Does not like Javert's methods but he respects him, but considering hes from an aristocratic family and has basically runaway from them and is out on the streets in a gamin guise well yeah not sure if they get on or not plus hes hanging around with Les Amis due to him being an informant for the League of the Pimpernel. I did have a thread in the gardens with the previous Javert where Max in aristo gear helped out some kdis who got in trouble with javert
Richard: well hes an English Politician very high up and thinks himself a little bit above the law. but yeah

Henri isn't someone he's likely to encounter (except perhaps during the uprising), and Henri would probably prefer to keep it that way. I can't imagine that Javert has any love for aristocrats turned armed rebels.
Victor and Feuilly are the two more likely to meet him, as they're both actively in Paris. That said, I don't have any definite/clear plot ideas at the moment, alas.
Feuilly of course is a revolutionary... but during his daily life that's likely not horribly obvious. I mean, he's a good worker and doesn't usually make much trouble--and likely one of the more unassuming of Les Amis. Aside of participating in a revolutionary movement, he's generally pretty law-abiding even. Which means I'm honestly not sure how any encounter between them until that point would go--it would depend, I suppose, entirely on if Javert happened to know what Feuilly is up to in his free time. Feuilly wouldn't want to be friends, but he would probably prefer to avoid being on Javert's list of "I will hunt you down"--and unless actively performing some revolutionary act, would probably vary between either entirely ignoring him, or being somewhat deferential.
Victor is anything but a revolutionary, but he tends to be a bit of a libertine off-duty. He's a captain in the cavalry and in Paris to teach the king to ride, more or less connected to the Chouannerie but absolutely loyal to the crown. He's a good officer on duty, but I doubt Javert would encounter him actually on duty (at least not until the uprising--at which point he will most likely diligently try to crush it). That said, though Victor is very much the haughty, self-centered aristocrat in some regards, he would respect Javert making something "respectable" of himself. So there's that.

Sylvie's attitude would start out as basically: Good, finally someone who knows his proper place in the grand scheme of things and is doing something about cleaning out the riffraff infesting the city. Of course, when that very same devotion to the law comes around to bite her on her fugitive aristo ass she'll be singing a different tune, but nobody's ever accused her of consistency. She also considers herself above the law so, though she almost never gets her hands dirty directly, her minions might get up some criminality on his patch. She'd probably look down on him for his race, but only because it makes him obviously 'not-French' in her eyes, and she looks down at everyone who isn't French. But she also does so with a large percentage of those who are, so it's nothing personal -- she's an equal opportunity hater.

Chauvelin has a knack for winding up in a position of authority no matter who's in charge of the government, so Javert would probably respect him on that basis. For his part, Chauv would appreciate Javert's intelligence and competence, but not his rigid personality, so they would likely interact only on a professional level. After the revolution, when Paul's back in Official Aristo Hunter mode, is I think when they'll get together (unless Gus introduces them earlier for some reason).
(Chauv has a similar role to Javert in the Pimpernel canon, his bete noire being the Scarlet Pimpernel).
Unlike Sylvie, Paul won't really care about Javert's race (though he might find it a little startling at first). He's read and respects Arno, so he has no notions of racial intellectual inferiority.

Mylène and Javert: Oh gosh, it's Javert!!! Run as FAST as you can...! Well, this could be interesting.... since we all know Javert has the principle of "once a thief, always a thief", and it certainly would apply to Mylie, since she's been a thief for the better part of her life, but now does some honest work. He'd probably have been the bane of her childhood and youth, and she wouldn't be able to shake that off even now. Question of course is also: does he know her from those times past? Mylène is under the silent 'protection' of Gustave, Javert's Seargent, and there's also the other side of the law looking out for her for whatever twisted reason: Thénardier. Bteween these two, things could certainly get interesting Lucien and Javert: aaah, someone to do the dirty work! Lucien will see Javert as to be thoroughly beneath him, but he'll appreciate this man's attitude and work ethics, since he just thinks everyone on the streets is scum. If it were not for Lucien's arrogance and attitude, these two could get along swimmingly ^^

Eponine has no doubt crossed paths with Javert before. She'd likely not want to ever again, but that's not really up to her. (*evil laugh*) I imagine Javert knows who she is at least a little bit, if nothing else by an extension of knowing who her father is. "Once a thief, forever a thief" definitely comes into play here. She's still playing her part in Patron-Minette's schemes from time to time and her involvement with the revolutionaries is picking up as well. I have no doubt these two will run into each other.

I AM SO EXCITE.
Valjean is still living in fear of Javert. It would be great for them to meet and cause Valjean to want to leave, because there will be Marius complicating things like taking Cosette. Idec how. But yeah.

Nathaniel: Nope, they will definitely not get on. :D
Max: He probably wouldn't like Max, but he'd use him for information. Closer to the revolution that could get interesting for Max, considering he's also with the Amis.
Richard: Nobody's above the law. The inspector will not appreciate his attitude.
Feuilly: If Javert were the type to see things in degrees rather than absolutes, then yes, as one of the less in-your-face Amis, he would get points for being not quite so bad. Because he's Javert though, he'd just see him as a revolutionary and that'd be that. But I think at this point he's still just keeping general tabs on student groups and not going so far as to pick out individual members, so it'd be entirely possible for them to meet and Javert wouldn't know about his 'extracurricular activities.' :D And if he stayed inoffensive and even deferential, Javert would think pretty well of him, but given that he'd probably be on duty, he also wouldn't take much notice of him. And then closer to the revolution or during, he'd do a bit of a double-take seeing Feuilly in with the Amis.
Victor: Oh, these two would be interesting! As part of the establishment (aristocracy AND military) Javert would respect him, but if he happened across him indulging in after-hours fun, he wouldn't respect Victor's personal choices. At all. And it would make for a rather confused inspector.
Sylvie: Gosh, I love her already. Am I allowed to say that? Anyway, yes. Anyone ostensibly in favor of law and order is all right in his books, especially a member of the aristocracy. And of course, as soon as that ceases to be true, she'll move to the other side of the ledger. :D He's probably had some run-ins with her minions, which I'm guessing she's not too happy about. But as far as his race, he grew up with it obviously and has accepted the opprobrium it brings with the same stoic attitude he approaches most things with. I think it's part of why he hates his own origins so much.
Chauvelin: Yeah, they make the most sense after the revolution, but it'll be interesting! Javert would basically respect him as an authority figure and they can bond over betes noirs. If he somehow knew Chauv had worked towards the revolution, he wouldn't like it, but after all's said and done as long as he's got power now Javert will just accept it and move on.
Mylène: Well, that's got a lot of potential there! Javert's got a decent memory for faces as long as you don't disguise yourself as mayor or anything and she wouldn't have changed that much in six years, so it might take him a little while to recognize her, but once he did... and if both Gustave and Thénardier are looking out for her, he'll be very confused and conflicted. On the one hand, Thénardier, a thief and worse; on the other, his friend and sergeant. Of course if Gus orders him to stand down he will, but he won't like it. :P
Lucien: Hehehe. Javert wouldn't mind his haughtiness, and they clearly share views on certain subjects; but yeah, Lucien wouldn't want to spend time with him.
Éponine: I think most of his knowledge of her at this point will be from who her father is, although since she's involved in Patron-Minette activities there's that too. And once the revolution picks up, he'll start paying more attention to Les Amis and might run across her that way. Whatever the circumstances, I'm sure he would be contemptuous of her, knowing she's a thief and Thénardier's daughter, although without any evidence I doubt he'd try to arrest her.
Valjean 24601: YES, ME TOO. You have no idea. Um, yes. Javert's still got his eye out (of course he does!), although he's not really expecting anything to come of it. And do you want their previous encounter outside the gates to be 'canon'? If so, this next time they meet, he'll start wondering why he keeps encountering the same guy, you know... maybe this means something. Either way, they could run into each other somewhere off Javert's normal beat, because I'm guessing Valjean won't willingly go anywhere near the police prefecture.

Victor and Javert: I could easily see Javert ending up running into a somewhat intoxicated Victor, who may or may not have an unidentified floozy on his arm. How this would go... well, it depends on what Javert would choose to do with a drunk aristocratic military officer I could see it being an entertaining encounter, especially if Javert ends up seeing both guises of Victor (the good officer and the rakehell) eventually. As far as Feuilly and Javert, the most I can think of (aside of things that would bring other Amis into it) would be if for some reason Javert checked in at the shop. Which seems unlikely, unless they have some report of criminal behavior among the workers there. And even then... I'm not sure why they would talk unless he wanted to interrogate Feuilly XD

Ooooh Idea: Mylène is still a bit of a wild child from time to time, and she loves to climb walls and houses for the sole fun of it, even though in former times she did it for stealing and for having a succesful escape route afterwards. Now, a man as lawful *cough* bias *cough* as Javert would probably not believe the 'for fun' part, and might stop her if he saw her coming down from a roof, right? aaah, the angst Can you feel it? ^^

And Javert may or may not appreciate that activity/believe them that they're fixing a roof and not up to something more... sinister.

OMG can you read my flipping MIND?!! I was thinking about the roof climbing to fix the oilcloth as a starter for that thread as well xDD and it would be a cool three way thread for SURE xD Poor Feuilly Javert, PLEASE believe them eventually and not see them as the new Bonnie and Clyde It would also be a cool dynamic of: "Oh no, it's Javert... I'm up on that roof, I could escape easily... but... he's got Feuilly... I can't leave him in Javert's grasp without trying to help him out. But if Javert sees ME he'll believe Feuilly even less...ARGH!"

Victor: Ha, entertaining is the word for it. Luckily for Victor, prison would be the very last resort. (Well, I say 'luckily' without knowing what his commanding officer is like! :P) If he was in uniform, Javert would try to get him to his barracks first, his family second, and only bring him in if those failed.
Feuilly + Mylène: What a great idea! And come on, who climbs rooves for fun? Of course Javert's going to think that's suspicious, even before he sees that Feuilly's partner-in-crime is Mylie. But with Feuilly there, considering he and the inspector don't have a history, they might just get off with a misguided warning instead of winding up in jail.
