[rs=2] | His life was influenced by a solitary incident that occurred when he was ten years old. He was walking along a path and dropped a 40 sous piece and a man stepped on it. Gervais told the man he was stepping on his coin and to lift his foot, but the man told him to go away. He kept trying to have the man take his foot off the coin, but he refused. Upset by the meanness of the man and the fact that he was stealing from him and he couldn’t do anything about it, Gervais went home. Now anyone who has read the novel, Les Miserables, (Vol. 1, Book 2, Chapter 13), will realize that the man who refused to take his foot off the coin was Jean Valjean. He thought the kid was bothering him. Kids threw rocks at him in town. He certainly wasn’t going to be bothered by a little kid who was by himself on a lonely road. When he finally lifted his foot, he saw a gleam from the ground. He looked down and saw the coin, and realized what he had done. It was an accident, he didn’t mean to steal the coin from the little boy. He called for him but the kid must’ve run away because Valjean couldn’t see him. He called after him again, but there was no answer. Incidents like this make Inspector Javerts who they are. And so it did Petit-Gervais. He found the meanness of the world too much to bear. He decided from the moment he had left the road that he would grow up to be someone who helped the little person from the likes of mean men like the one who stole his coin. He told his parents he wanted to be a policeman. He went to school, though his parents could’ve used his help more on their farm. He got the best grades in his class. He learned how to shoot a pistol and rifle soon after the incident. He talked his father into believing it would be useful for him to learn how to protect himself and his family better. He learned how to fight and grew stronger so he could fight bigger and stronger men, if it was necessary. He was admitted into the Police Academy and climbed up the ranks to be captain of his cadets. His scores, marksmanship were the best in his class. He was the best in his self defense classes as well. He became a police officer and excelled. He understood how to treat people. He understood who was good, who was bad, and who was sneaky enough to seem good but was bad. He was too smart for anyone to pull the wool over his eyes. In fact, he was such an excellent judge of people, he went up in rank in the local police prefecture. When he was 24, he was promoted to Sergeant and was transferred to Paris. This was when the student uprisings began and the government wanted some people they could put into school and get close to the student leaders. Gervais succeeded. While he made reports to headquarters of most of what he knew, he also liked the students who were uprising against the government. He understood it more than most. What, after all, was the difference between a man with his foot on a coin and refusing to get off it and a government who had their foot on the people’s coins and its refusal to get off it? That was the reason for the upheaval as far as Gervais was concerned. He was in turmoil over his sense of duty to the law, his friendship with the students in the uprising, and his personal agreement in their cause.
