Hi! So.
Well, my name's Ashley (which in all honesty, I've never liked my name. But then I'm too lazy to pick a decent pseudonym that is pronounceable to the Anglophone world). I'm a Michigander, which means I'm used to slaughtered French place names Hahaha. I'm 21. I'm a university student in my last year as an undergrad. I'm a Russian studies major with an international relations minor. And, as it always says on my applications to everything, significant coursework in history.
I have a dog and a cat, though they both live with my parents. I graduate in April and after that I don't know what I'm doing, but... I'll figure something out. I'll have to make money doing some kind of job, but hopefully I may be able to go abroad again. And then... eventually I intend on going to grad school. So far probably for a PhD in Russian/Eurasian/Eastern European history, but I suppose that's subject to change. That is where most of my research interests are, though...
Um. What else. I'm a hockey fan, but the only hockey I've ever played beyond street hockey was as a floor hockey goalie. That was fun. I rode horses for ten years and would love to get back into someday. I did target shooting on a school team for a year, and tried Renaissance-style fencing for a semester. Dog training is another big hobby of mine, but my dog is getting older now (she's 12) and I haven't been to a show in years.
I love to travel, and spent summer 2012 in Kiev, Ukraine. One of the best experiences of my life, and I'm likely to blather about it because it was that fun. And entertaining. And seriously, weirdly memorable things happen to you if you travel with an open mind in that part of the world and speak the language well enough to talk to random people. Other favorite places to travel have been Quebec, and I was in Germany for three weeks in high school which was also great.
Which reminds me. I love languages. English is my native, of course, but I'm pretty proficient in Russian. I can read German fairly well if I have to and can muddle through reading Polish and Ukrainian if necessary. Oh, and historical markers in French, because I swear every military word ever is a cognate. I'm usually half-heartedly trying to learn some new language, but for now I'm trying to make myself focus on brushing my Russian up to near-fluency.
I do like to read, though authors and such vary a lot. Mikhail Bulgakov, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Alexandre Dumas, JRR Tolkien, Isaac Babel, and really... many more. I tend to make myself believe I prefer non-fiction, but I do love fiction too if I get into it. I just tend to feel like I'm doing something with my life if I'm reading non-fiction history books.
Anything else you want to know... ask!
