They took residence in Montfermeil, where their inn wasn't exactly the safest place to stay the night (you'd rather be out in the snowy streets than take up one of their rooms). Madame and her husband are some of the sneakiest people around. They can get you to come into their inn and then steal all of the goods off of you before you realize anything is missing. Along with stealing, they were good about getting all the money they could out of you. "Charge 'em for the lice, extra for the mice, two percent for looking in the mirror twice." Her unlucky victims at the inn not only got stuff stolen from them, but essentially got poisoned with the food made there. "Kidney of a horse, liver of a cat, filling up the sausages with this and that." Madame pretends to be nice and fair, but is quite the opposite. She feels no remorse hurting others, whether close to her or not. She abandoned her three sons; one named Gavroche took up the life of a street rat and revolutionary, the other two were sent away to live with a random woman simply because Madame Thenardier could care less about the extras in her family. She only ever cared for her daughters, Eponine and Azelma, and spoiled them silly until poverty brought them to Paris. As well as being heartless, she took advantage of people, such as Fantine. When the young woman asked the innkeepers to take care of her daughter while she sent them money to do so, she and her husband agreed, only to take the money and barely spend any on dear Cosette. Cosette was therefore mistreated and was dirty and in rags while Eponine and Azelma were in the finest clothes. While they received love and care, Cosette was left alone to do hard chores and live a miserable life, until Valjean showed up. He paid to take her, which, comon, Madame barely hesitated to take the 1500 francs. Now in Paris, the Thenardiers have not stepped away from their less than pure life. Instead, they have turned from conning to more of just downright stealing, and have been living off of money from others' goods. Madame has even started to lose her love of her daughters, for poverty causes a dog eat dog world and you have to fight to survive, even if that means fighting your family. APPEARANCE: Madame Thenardier is described as being extremely unattractive. She is tall, ruddy, and barrel-like, with long, straggly black curly hair that sits on top of her head like a bird's nest. Her makeup and jewelry was usually overdone, and her clothing was quite a spectacle. Her dresses were usually bright in color and obnoxious in design, with her, ehem, cleavage hanging dangerously close to coming out of the bust line. Now that she is suffering from a life of poverty, her appearance has taken somewhat of a turn. Her eyes are dark and the bags under them even darker, her face is thin and the skin is wrinkled, giving her the appearance of being years older than what she really is. Her clothes are no longer flamboyant, but barely anything more than rags. She no longer wears makeup and her hair is graying and is even more of a mess than it was prior to poverty. GOALS: To be wealthy and powerful. HISTORY: Madame Thenardier was born in Montfermeil some odd years ago (how long ago she isn't very eager to tell), to a family very similar to the one she later created. Her father was a government official that often conned and threatened others into getting what he wanted, while her mother was a crusty old maiden who wasn't a big fan of any of her 6 children, except for the one boy in the family. Madame grew up without any love from her mother and that shaped her personality immensely. She met Thernardier at the age of 18 and married him shortly after, eager to get away from her family. They opened up an inn in the middle of town, The Sergeant at Waterloo, and started living a life of conning. By conning, the two managed to keep the inn open and to keep themselves economically sound. With this, they decided to start having children, and not too long after, Madame was blessed with Eponine. Eponine was showered with love and gifts. The same happened a year after when Azelma was born. Madame was pleased with her two beautiful daughters and tried her luck for a third, but instead ended up with a mangy little boy, Gavroche. Most of the time, the little boy would be ignored while the girls were dressed in fine clothes and playing with fine toys. Things were more crowded in the inn as a young woman came in holding a little girl. She asked the Thernardiers to take care of her daughter in exchange for regular pay. Hearing the word "pay", the two agreed to take little Cosette in, but treated her like a slave. They dressed the foreign little girl in rags and forced her to work, and if she angered them, beat her. After having two more little boys, the family was large and costly, and the inn was not receiving much service. The Thernardiers were struggling to make ends meet, eventually living off of what Fantine was paying them. So it wasn't a surprise that Cosette was paid off of them so easily. After Valjean made his promise to find and take care of Cosette, he showed up at the inn and offered 1500 francs for Cosette, which they eagerly took. The Thernardiers went through the 1500 francs quickly and with no money, they were forced to close down the inn and move to Paris in poverty, taking Epinone, Azelma, and Gavroche and sending the two youngest boys away to live with a woman named Magnon. They never saw these two boys again. In Paris, they found that stealing was their best bet for living under such circumstances. With money from goods stolen, they would be able to survive. The whole family, including Azelma and Eponine, were forced to help steal from homes in the dark of night. The family started breaking apart, and it got to the point where Madame Thenardier could not stand her husband, her daughters couldn't bare to even be associated with their mother, and her son, Gavroche, ran away. Madame doesn't let this get to her, however. There's only one thing she wants, and that is wealth. ----- ALIAS: Colette AGE: 16 GENDER: Female OTHER CHARACTERS: N/A HOW DID YOU FIND US: advertising on a site ROLEPLAY SAMPLE: The smell of rotting, stinking flesh with the bitterness of beer filled the air in the inn, and that was the aroma of home. Madame Thenardier had become more than accustomed to this god-awful stench after years of being trapped in this hell hole of an establishment. Complaining had come naturally to her throughout the years, though honestly this life was much better than that of her earlier years. Besides, she had found a nice little talent that she had never would have discovered if she hadn't of met Thenardier. Before she walked down the stairs, she stopped to check her reflection in the dirty, cracked window mounted on the wall by a nail, where she fixed her bird’s nest hair and situated her breasts in her dress so they were more prominent. After she was satisfied with her, ehem, interesting appearance, she sauntered down the stairway, wrinkling her nose at the site of the regulars. The drunkards sat in their usual areas, and some even decided to take a little beauty nap on the floor, drooling like toddlers with spilled beer around them. Madame took no time in stepping around these disgusting vermin of people, but instead stepped on them as she went to find her dear Eponine and Azelma. Many of the unconscious folks didn't even stir, but a few huffed and gruffed as Madame’s not so light weight crushed their backs and stomachs and her heels impaled them. Thenardier was busy serving beer, or piss, she couldn't really tell anymore and neither could half the guests, and getting friendly with the new, wealthier looking guests. She knew there would be more valuables in the back room by the time the day was done. Their collection was growing fine in size; quite the profit could be made by all the watches, spectacles, and other assorted items they happened to borrow from unsuspecting people. Madame could fit numerous items down her bust; one day she had gathered five pairs of spectacles, two watches, and several francs down there, without it being the least bit noticeable. One of her many talents, for sure. Eponine and Azelma came into view seconds later, wearing the darling little dresses and bonnets mommy had bought them just a few days prior. She beamed as she saw her two little girls. “Oh my little darlings, don’t you two look just precious!” She grabbed the girls and brought them closer so she could get a better look. “My little babies.” Madame gave them sloppy kisses to which they had lipstick smudges on their cheeks afterwards; she tried to rub off the red marks but only made them worse. Mind you, while she was showering this affection to her eldest babies, baby Gavroche was in his room in a crib alone, crying, in need of being changed and fed. Madame knew this as well as anyone, though Gavroche was often on back-burner when it came to the other children. Little boys, they’re all just brats, aren't they? “Why don’t you two go play outside, but be careful not to ruin those pretty little dresses. They cost more francs than you two can imagine.” And if Monsieur Thenardier found out how much they were, she’d be in trouble as well, though she could care less about what that old coot thought. Speaking of little brat children, where was that little degenerate that she had agreed to take in? “Cosette!” the woman spoke loudly, in a harsh voice that was on the opposite end of the spectrum with the voice she had just used on her Eponine and Azelma. A dirty little blonde girl came out of the shadows, smudges covered her face and rags covered her body, where her feet were not covered at all, despite the chilly weather. Her face read something of complete terror, and her body trembled of either fear or cold, but probably a combination of both. “Well I can’t talk to you from over there, come closer.” She demanded, and Cosette inched closer, though worked hard to stay in a safe distance from her caretaker. Cosette’s broom, which was taller than she, rested by her side and she gripped it so tightly her knuckles had turned white. “What did I tell you to do this morning?” Cosette took this in for a second, like it had been meant as a trick question. You told me to sweep, Madame. she looked down and spoke softly as she talked. “Look at me when you’re speaking.” Cosette looked up. “I did tell you to sweep.” Madame Thenardier kneeled down and ran a finger over the wood floor, coming up with a dirtied finger. “Then what is this?” Cosette said nothing. Madame came closer, grabbed the girls hair, forced her to go down on her knees, and put her head down to the floor. “Does that look like a clean floor to you?!” Tears threatened to erupt from Cosette’s eyes, though Madame hadn't stuck around long enough to watch the waterworks. She didn't have anything further to say or do; Cosette knew that she needed to sweep better. What a useless little girl. I should have never agreed to take the little thing in. Heh, I should have asked for double what Fantine had offered. Yes, that would have been much better. She walked away, scanning for someone to con, for new items to be added to their collection.
