Before Marius, Cosette had only been in love once. She had been in love with the Luxemborg Gardens.
It was a fairy tale land, complete with fountains and a reflective pool. Cosette could wander for hours among the trees and flowers. She admired the statues, finding her favorites and seeking out others that she had never seen before. How could one commit to such a project? If it were she, Cosette would surely chip away a nose or arm in the marble! The faces were so smooth and beautiful, they appeared to be angels.
She sat under the trees for quite some time, her eyes scanning for Marius. He was in class all day, she knew she would not find him. Still, her heart hoped that his green eyes would seek hers from across the way as they always had. It was here that she first saw him and loved him.
The summer flowers were in full bloom as she moved on to lay in the sunshine, twirling little buds together to form a flower crown. The April showers had been bountiful in supplying rain for all of the flowers in the garden. They had grown splendidly. Cosette felt like a butterfly, fluttering from each one to the next. She even picked a small bouquet to take home to her Papa.
The reflective pool was a fascination of Cosette's. A silver mirror that reflected her image to her in crystal clear quality. She ran her fingertips across the smooth surface, causing ripples that spread and spread. It was mesmerizing, the way the sun's rays danced off the water. She felt the sudden urge to leap in and disrupt the perfectness of it all. A reflection across the way caught her eye.
It wasn't Marius, but still the face was familiar. Cosette's gaze traveled up to a boy younger than her. He was handsome and well dressed, in the attire of a Royal. It occurred to Cosette like the lighting of a match that this was the young Prince of France. She blinked rapidly and then curtsied.
