Please keep this close to your heart my dear, I have bribed one of the men to deliver this to you, half a day’s rations seem nothing in order to send you this piece of information. I can only hope Paris is offering you lots of wonderful things; although I fear things may be turning for the worst within Paris’s walls. Oh my, I will be in so much trouble if someone finds out I’ve been sending letters beyond our camp, but I could not resist informing you of my recent change in circumstance. I’ve finally done it! Followed my heart and left everything I knew behind. You would scarcely recognise me now, I wear plain clothes, but I would not change it for the world. Everything seems so clear now; my purpose in life was always to arrive here, ready to support the man who will help push France into a new regime. Liberté, égalité, fraternité! The very words thrill me to the core! My only fear is that my love should perish under this dream, and with it my very soul. I do not know if you know what it’s like to love someone more than yourself, but even now such thoughts my heart ache. Things are moving fast here and this may perhaps be my last letter to you for a long time…if ever. I want you to know how dear to me you have been, even if we have not seen each other since we were very young. Your letters have always filled me with hope and I am happy in the knowledge that you will receive this letter. If I can offer you any advice for the future it will always be to follow your heart, for only your heart knows what you truly desire. P.S - If you are able to respond, send a note back with the gentleman that delivers this letter. He will ensure your letter will reach me. Your dear friend, Helene |
