Events like these, a market and loads of attractions reminded Mylène like nothing else of the time she had spent with Alain and his troup, The Corbeaux, the ravens so to say. They would have been here as sure as day followed night, they would have set up their three wagons, their little podium and put a rope between two high places and the show would have been on – with Mylène amongst them! It felt peculiar to now being on the receiving and not giving end of such a festival, very peculiar indeed. As if somehow she was just pretending, playing a game and wearing a mask that hid her true identity. But what was her true identity now? she had been so many things, starting as a peasant girl, then an exploited factory child, a child thief, a juggler… and now she was a barmaid, earning her living in an honest way – and waiting for the big changes to begin, burning bright for a revolution that may now break out any day! Was it really possible to be still one and the same person with so many lives meshed in one? And would that be the last role she had in life? Somehow she couldn’t picture herself to be a barmaid forever, but what else should she do?
As if on cue to her thoughts, she suddenly saw herself walking past a tent, giving off quite a mysterious air, and a sign outside told her that a fortune teller would be inside. Mylène’s face crossed her trademark mischievous smile. Fortune telling, yeah sure! Somehow, living with a juggler group had made her disbelieving about a LOT of show acts that could strike awe in your normal visitor, since she had seen that two thirds of every show act usually was just that: a big show. There was skill needed for it, of course, but the majority relied on people believing you could do somethingotherwordly, even though there might be a reasonable explanation and a few tricks to all of it. Alain’s wife Estelle had been putting up little shows of being able to know the future, but especially when it came to things like tea leafs and the ominous crystal ball, she had betrayed to the curious girl that often she just used her imagination and little pointers she got by what she saw in the person itself: clothes they wore, how they held themselves… crystal ball reading was more than anything people reading.
The Tarot cards however were a different thing, and even Mylène had to admit that. The way the cards displayed before your eyes could sometimes be creepily fitting and not just in hindsight! So… what was it to be? Should she pay the Mystic Dymphna a visit? The little mischievous voice inside her head, the one that was always ready for a good laugh and adventure egged her on to do it, whispering: ‘Hey, why not? If anything, it will be amusing what she makes of you. Maybe she’ll predict you to become a loving housewife with three wonderful brats, and your husband of course is a succesful merchant or a professor.’ An amused snort escaped her lips, which earned her a peculiar glance by the woman that just had exited the tent, cheeks flushed as if she had been told something rather embarassing or exciting. Before anyone else could step up or she would change her mind, Mylène quickly stepped towards the tent and ducked through the flap. The interior was really professional, she had to give her that, it was aweinspiring certainly for those who did not see the tools behind it.
With an amused smile still playing around her lips, Mylène sat down on the offered chair and cocked her head in thinking. Should she give the woman a chance to let her imagination blossom into full bloom, or did she really want to find out a little of what the future might bring? “I’ll take the cards”, she decided finally and leaned back, watching the precise and sure movement of the woman, admiring it almost. She surely had done that often before, and apparently made good money with it. When she was asked for what she wanted to know, Mylène once again took a moment to think. Her first gut reaction had be wanting to ask how she could find more about Alain’s whereabouts, but something held her back. Maybe it was her instincts, telling her to be careful with such things. After all, she knew best that travelling folk were the keepers and conveyers of many a dangerous secret. It might not do well to have spread beyond her control that someone still was interested in his fate. When she realized already a few seconds had passed, she hastily said: “Can you tell me something about what the next few years will bring for me?”
Maybe she was optimistic in stretching her life span across a few years, but then,if the cards should tell her that she might not live that long, she at least knew she should make the most of now… Another smile briefly crossed her face. That sounded nice even… she’d knew of a few things she’d like to do before she went belly up.

The Mystic inclined her head towards the young girl who had entered her tent, the question was a simple one and the mystic was sure the cards would give her the answer she desired. The mystic began to slowly pull out cards, the magician, the queen of wands and the five of pentacles. She smiled slowly; yes the message was very clear indeed. She took a deep breath, pointing at the magician card.
‘The Magician suggests that there will be new ideas in your future, however there’s also a chance there is a trickster nearby so beware of them. The queen suggests that there will be a person in your life, or possibly yourself who is filled with warmth and energy. This person could be an entertainer, leader or some kind of activist? This positive energy in your future will draw people to you.’ The mystic paused looking with interest at the last card, ‘an interesting card to have drawn…’ she says slowly her hand hovering over the card.
‘This card suggests a plea from you; the story of the card presents two characters sat outside a church. The card suggests there will be loss and a setback in finances. The characters are embarrassed by their impoverished state…and are too proud to ask for help. They prefer to rely on each other than ask the church for alms. The question this card poses is how will you survive in such a poverty without losing ones pride. The answer…you must reconsider your values. By doing so your true friends will reveal themselves, you will no longer be fooled by fake friendships.’
The Mystic looked up, ‘the cards have certainly given you a lot to think about…I hope that answers your question’ she said softly…

Almost against her will, Mylène felt intrigue take over her as the woman took hold of the cards and started to lay them between them on the table. She had watched Estelle doing this so many times, and she had asked about the meaning of some of the cards, and wondered which she would be getting. Something with the Cups maybe? That would indicate something about relationships and love life, even though she usually took these things as they came. Or the pentacles? They usually had a financial reading. And then of course the Major Arcana, the great figureheads like Judgement, Justice and the Empress. Wouldn’t it be funny if Justice or the Wheel of Fortune appeared, indicating maybe something about the changes she wanted to fight for?
But then she saw the three cards incident – or fate? – had chosen for her: Magician, queen of wands and five of pentacles. Hmm… well then maybe some money was involved after all, but were the odd numbers the positive ones or the even? She probably would know very soon! If anything, it would be interesting to see what the Mystic made of it. Already the first explanation made her bite back a chuckle. A trickster?! The first person that came to mind of who she might have to beware was Louis Thénardier. He might act like a father figure around her, but she still would never really trust him or turn her back to him for more than a few seconds. You were always better safe than sorry. The next card, Queen of Wands, confused Mylène a little, since it took her a while to comprehend that this person could as well be herself as someone else – but since it was a female card and not the King of Wands, she guessed the ‘activist’ was probably herself. “Nice to think I draw people IN for a change”, she quipped in a low tone. “Usually I only repel with my tongue.”
The last card and its explanation had her leaning forward though, now thoroughly intrigued and still a little confused. Reconsider her values… fake friendships? What could that possibly mean, if anything at all? She would have to be careful not to turn paranoid though, she quickly monished herself. There might be something to it, or there might be not. Only time would tell. What she DID like though was that apparently all of this meant her fate was still in her own hands. She could do something to alter it, if she so wished, and there WERE changes coming. “Hmm… so I guess I have to make my choices, with what comes my way. At least poverty’s no problem”, she snorted slightly. “I’m used to that.” Nodding towards the woman, she then stood up. “I wish you good success for the rest of the day… You surely have the mysterious act down to a tee, keep it up!” And with a mocking two finger salute, Mylène left the tent and stepped back into reality.
